Judy Garland is known for her performance as Dorothy Gale but there are many facts about the making of "The Wizard of OZ", you probably don't know like what really happened in the lion scene or if the hanging of a munchkin legend is true. Judy Garland was 16 at the time she was filming "The Wizard of OZ", and was already well developed so to make her look younger the costume had a corset to look like 9 year old. Also, Judy's blue and white dress wasn't actually blue and white it was blue and pink. Dorothy's dog Toto was injured in filming because a flying monkey stepped on her! The dog who played her was payed $125 a week, while the munchkins were only paid $50. Toto had a dance number but it was cut because the movie was to long. The actor who played Glinda was 54 at the time even the wicked witch was younger than that by 9 years. Also, the actor who played the witch caught on fire during her exit scene and had to hold off on filming for 6 months. She had a liquid diet while filming because her makeup was toxic. Toto was female and judy loved her so much she wanted to keep him but the company wanted Toto to keep doing movies so she couldn't. Scarecrow was a smoker and he even smoked in his costume, 3 times he caught on fire because of the ashes falling on him. Scarecrows costume makeup was really tight on hid face, so tight that he had lines on his face for a year after they wrapped. Judy's daughter and tin mans son married and stayed together for 5 years before splitting. While filming the lion scene Judy had a bad case of giggles so when the director got to frustrated he brought her off set and slapped her after that she did the scene perfectly. The lion costume was made of real lion fur and added up to about 90 pounds. Tin man's costume was like a turtle's shell so when he fell down he would have to wait for somebody to walk by and help him up. In his introduction scene when he cried it was chocolate syrup instead of oil because oil didn't film well. Judy's iconic song 'Over the Rainbow' was almost cut because of the long movie time but instead they cut the reprise because it was to sad. When the film first came out it was a flop but now it is and academy award winning beloved movie that most kids and adults can enjoy together.
